Session 2E: Thursday, May 30, 2:00-3:00 pm
Digital Equality: The Importance of Accessibility in Your Publishing Strategy

Compelled by clear ethical reasons and compliance requirements, most publishers are working to make content fully accessible. Creating content that is “born accessible” also opens up new opportunities for publishers to expand the reach of content and connect with new audiences and markets. The same technologies and guidelines that improve access to materials for people with visual, hearing, mobility, perceptual and cognitive limitations, or who face other barriers to reading printed materials, can also be tremendously useful to all customers.

In this session, we’ll discuss how verified accessible content drives positive social change through technology AND makes good business sense. You’ll learn:

  • How properly structured and tagged content improves discoverability and is the foundation for accessibility

  • What Section 508 and WCAG compliance means for publishers and their digital content

  • Practical tips to build accessibility into publishing workflows

  • How well structured content and metadata improves rendering for multiple formats and platforms, including HTML5 and EPUB3

Presenters:

Mike Groth, Director of Marketing, Cenveo Publisher Services (moderator)
Atul Goel, President, Cenveo Publisher Services
Pamela Starr, Ph.D, Director, Student Ability Success Center, San Diego State University
Caroline Desrosiers, formerly SAGE Publishing and currently CEO + Co-Founder, textBOX Digital

Scholarly Publishing at the Crossroads: What’s working, what’s holding us back, where do we go from here?

As the Society for Scholarly Publishing celebrates its 40th anniversary, the theme for the conference highlights the many crossroads within scholarly publishing, including past and future practices, changing revenue models, funding challenges, regulation changes, technological innovations, and reaching new markets while maintaining established ones. These crossroads introduce new challenges as well as new opportunities for scholarly publishing and for the communities it serves and push us to keep up with the changing needs of researchers and academics who both generate and use the content. As we look back, could we have predicted forty years ago where scholarly publishing would be today? How can we anticipate the needs for the future? What questions do we need to be asking—and answering—to move forward?

60th Annual Conference

In recent years, dramatic changes in scholarly publishing have altered how researchers consume, exchange, interact with, and disseminate scholarly communications.

These dramatic changes will leave a footprint on global scholarship of the future but presently are plagued by diverging views, potentially leading to diverging paths toward the same goals.

This conference will examine where we’ve been, the forces that impact future directions, who the stakeholders are, and how we create a future where the researchers gain value through the support each stakeholder provides toward a successful transformation.

Cenveo Publisher Services is a proud sponsor of this important industry event!
