SSP Annual Meeting

Scholarly Publishing at the Crossroads: What’s working, what’s holding us back, where do we go from here?

As the Society for Scholarly Publishing celebrates its 40th anniversary, the theme for the conference highlights the many crossroads within scholarly publishing, including past and future practices, changing revenue models, funding challenges, regulation changes, technological innovations, and reaching new markets while maintaining established ones. These crossroads introduce new challenges as well as new opportunities for scholarly publishing and for the communities it serves and push us to keep up with the changing needs of researchers and academics who both generate and use the content. As we look back, could we have predicted forty years ago where scholarly publishing would be today? How can we anticipate the needs for the future? What questions do we need to be asking—and answering—to move forward?

The Publishing Ecosystem: An Open Conversation with Researchers and Editors

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) will feature a panel of STEM, and social science creators/consumers who will offer their individual perspectives on the scholarly publishing process. Come with an open mind and questions that explore such topics as:

  • the current publishing experience – the good, bad, and ugly struggle researchers experience to get published
  • the relevance of peer review (both traditional and new forms) for today’s researcher
  • the shifting importance of preprints as research outputs and measures of productivity
  • how researchers decide where to submit their manuscript
  • the ongoing debate on impact factor, altmetrics, and appropriate research evaluation measures
  • public access/open access for publications and data sharing -- what matters to/affects you?

 Panelists:

  • Dannagal G. Young, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication, University of Delaware
  • Dr. Willie H. (Billy) Oglesby, PhD, MBA, MSPH, FRSHP, FACHE, Associate Dean for Academic & Student Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University, College of Population Health

WEBINAR: Digital Equality - The Importance of Accessibility in Your Publishing Strategy

Compelled by clear ethical reasons and compliance requirements, most publishers are working to make content fully accessible. Creating content that is “born accessible” also opens up new opportunities for publishers to expand the reach of content and connect with new audiences and markets. The same technologies and guidelines that improve access to materials for people with visual, hearing, mobility, perceptual and cognitive limitations, or who face other barriers to reading printed materials, can also be tremendously useful to all customers.

In this webinar, we’ll discuss how verified accessible content drives positive social change through technology AND makes good business sense. You’ll learn:

  • How properly structured and tagged content improves discoverability and is the foundation for accessibility
  • What Section 508 and WCAG compliance means for publishers and their digital content
  • Practical tips to build accessibility into publishing workflows
  • How well structured content and metadata improves rendering for multiple formats and platforms, including HTML5 and EPUB3

Panelists

  • Rachel Comerford, Director of Content Standards, Macmillan Learning
  • Anna Selden, Associate Director of Publications, Georgetown Law
  • Rohan Kohli, Head, Learning Design & Accessibility, Cenveo Publisher Services
  • Denis Wilson, Editor-in-Chief, Publishing Executive/Book Business

60th Annual Conference

In recent years, dramatic changes in scholarly publishing have altered how researchers consume, exchange, interact with, and disseminate scholarly communications.

These dramatic changes will leave a footprint on global scholarship of the future but presently are plagued by diverging views, potentially leading to diverging paths toward the same goals.

This conference will examine where we’ve been, the forces that impact future directions, who the stakeholders are, and how we create a future where the researchers gain value through the support each stakeholder provides toward a successful transformation.

Open Data, Science, and Digital Scholarship

What is "open science/open digital scholarship?" "Open" -- whether narrowly understood as access or more broadly understood as transparency -- has increased journal readership, citations, alternative metrics, and online attention, but it goes beyond getting more eyeballs on research. It's also about social justice and giving tax payers -- patients, family members, concerned citizens -- access to the research they fund while increasing public literacy.
